Soup, Community, and Giving Back: Our Day at the 16th Annual Empty Bowls Event

Participating reminded us why these events matter so much

On November 20, 2025, we had the pleasure of participating once again in the 16th Annual Empty Bowls Event at Newmarket’s Old Town Hall, hosted by the Pine Tree Potters’ Guild. This beautiful tradition brings the community together to support local charities dedicated to relieving hunger and homelessness.

The event’s success is driven by both the creativity of local potters and artists and the strong engagement of the community. Guests not only enjoy the beautifully crafted bowls, but also the delicious soups and breads, generously donated by local culinary contributors. Beyond the food and art, Empty Bowls offers an opportunity to learn about the meaningful work supporting Inn From the Cold and Welcoming Arms.

This year, we were excited to contribute a pot of Roasted Leek & Cauliflower soup. It was wonderful to see so many people enjoying it alongside other soups and breads. There’s something truly special about being part of an event where every bowl, every ladle of soup, and every smile feels connected to a bigger purpose.

The atmosphere at Empty Bowls is uniquely heartwarming. Guests start by selecting a handcrafted bowl from nearly 600 pieces made by the Guild over the year, each one completely unique. Watching people choose the bowl that resonates with them is always a highlight. Afterwards, everyone moves to the dining area to enjoy a variety of soups and breads. At the end of the seating, guests take their bowls home, serving as a meaningful reminder that not everyone has a full bowl each day.

Since its inception, Empty Bowls has raised nearly $286,000, providing much-needed support to Welcoming Arms (Aurora) and Inn From the Cold (Newmarket). Seeing the community come together in this way is incredibly inspiring. Participating reminded us why these events matter so much.

Being part of Empty Bowls is more than just serving soup—it’s about connecting with the community and contributing to something that truly makes a difference. We’re already looking forward to the 17th Annual Empty Bowls Fundraiser and can’t wait to support this important cause again.
